BARABOO - Two former managers of a Lake Delton recreational vehicle resort face up to 10 years in prison after the prosecution charges they took about $120,000 from their employer through unauthorized credit card and cell phone accounts.
Joan C. Loveless, 57, of Baraboo, appeared in Sauk County Circuit Court Wednesday. Her former co-worker Robert J. Williams, also 57 and of Baraboo, was in court Monday. Each faces a single count of theft in a business setting as a party to the crime, according to documents filed in court by the Sauk County District Attorney's Office.
According to the documents, the president of the resort's board of directors spoke with a Sauk County Sheriff's Department detective last year. He said he saw some financial problems and hired a Baraboo accounting firm to audit the park's books.
The audit found Loveless had an unauthorized credit card and had charged nearly $82,000 to the park's general fund between 2000 and 2004, he said. Williams was authorized to have a credit card in the resort's name, but the audit found more than $7,300 of unauthorized charges the park improperly paid for, according to records.
Loveless had also opened a cell phone account in the park's name, and provided phones for herself, Williams, a third employee and her husband. Unauthorized charges for the cell phones, purchases and a $17,000 payment for the third employee's medical insurance allegedly added up to another $32,000 over the period in question, records show.
When she was contacted by the detective, Loveless said she made personal purchases with the resort's account, but said she repaid some of them. She also said she bought or was given property such as a washer, dryer and video system the resort president says belongs to the resort.
When he was interviewed by an investigator, Wiliams acknowledged making unauthorized purchases, but said he thought Loveless was repaying the resort. He said he had come up with $12,000 to repay Pioneer Park, the records show.
Loveless and Williams are free on signature bonds after their hearings. He is due back in court Nov. 15, and she must return Nov. 22, records show.
