Daniel Trainor (26), appeared before Newry Crown Court after commiting a catalogue of offences on January 9 of this year, including dangerous driving at speed on the wrong side of the road and accelerating towards a police officer after being stopped at a checkpoint.

He eventually stopped, but as officers were getting out of their vehicle in front of him he rammed their car and drove off. Police again followed him.

When taken to Armagh police station Trainor was found to be disqualified following an earlier traffic offence and he refused to provide a sample of breath for testing for alcohol, although officers suspected that he had been drinking.

His legal representative told the court: "The events that occurred are no credit to him, indeed the opposite. He panicked when he saw the police."
